UBD Stage #3:
PLAN LEARNING
EXPERIENCE
SMART GOALS:
1. At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to identify or match the
components of WHERETO used in Stage #3 of UbD template.
2. At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to explain the components of

Ubd Stage #3 Overview
The main focus for Stage #3 is making sure that learning activities and plans logically flow from the goals established in Stage #1 and assessments from Stage #2. It is critical to have engaging activities with purpose focused on the learning objectives in the lesson (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011).
It is important to have an effective instructional plan that allows students to get the opportunities to learn and make the connections and transfer for long term retention and application of the content
(Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). This includes being able to do the subject as opposed to just answering questions – transferring knowledge.

The third stage of UbD template focuses on the acronym “WHERETO”. The elements found in the “WHERETO” model for design can best be described as follows (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011):
W – What students are expected to do, where the lesson is headed and why, and
where the students are coming from, their background. This element provides
some direction and data for the lesson.

H – The “Hook” and “Hold”. This is the hook that engages the student’s interest in
learning and holds their attention and excitement throughout.
E – Equip students with the necessary tools and experiences and knowledge for
meeting the goals of the lesson.
R – Provide students opportunities to revise and rethink on their work and
understanding. Using reflection is a key strategy.
E – Provide opportunities for students to evaluate their understanding by providing
feedback and opportunities to improve their work.

T – Learning opportunities will be tailored to meet the various needs of students through differentiation.
O – How will the unit/lesson be organized for the most effective and efficient learning at the highest
levels for students?

It is critical to remember that this template is just that, a template. These are not a prescribed, step-by-step method for guaranteeing student learning (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). However, it is a polished framework that can help a planner reach the most optimal learning for students by considering each of these elements as a valuable part of the learning process.
