Ubd WORKSHOP
GETTING STARTED
WELCOME TO THE UbD WORKSHOP
Workshop Learning Objectives
1. At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to identify the stages of the
Understanding by Design (UbD) template.
2. At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to identify key components of each
stage in the UbD process.
3. At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to create and explain activities and
assessments that engage students in higher order thinking.

About the instructor
Welcome to this workshop! It will be a great introductory session for the Understanding by Design process and template used at Wright State. I am currently enrolled in Graduate School at Wright State University. I am Superintendent of Greenon Local Schools. My wife, Melanie, and I have been married for 27 years and have three wonderful children: Jackie, Nathan, and Ellie. We are also happy to have a daughter-in-law, Chelsae. We enjoy the beach and riding motorcycles.
Course Materials
For this workshop, participants will need access to the internet, a computer or laptop to create with, and access to YouTube. To make the learning as effective as possible the following books should also be purchased and read:
- The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units
by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
Copyright 2011 - Understanding by Design Guide to Advanced Concepts in Creating and Reviewing Units

Course Schedule
Over the next six weeks, teachers will create lesson plans using the UbD design template. By the end of the sessions, teachers will have at least 5 lessons completed using this design and template format. These lessons will include high quality assessments and activities that will promote student transformation of knowledge using high order thinking skills and authentic activities. Teachers will also complete the various assessments included within the workshop as evidence of their learning about UbD. Each week a lesson plan will be developed and reviewed by peer groups within the workshop.
Understanding by design overview
Understanding by Design is an instructional method based on backwards design principles (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). This method utilizes acquisition of knowledge, making meaning of knowledge and transfer of knowledge to achieve longterm comprehension and application (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). There are three stages of the UbD template. The first stage is Identifying Desired Results, this is setting clear, focused goals for learning. The second stage is Determining Acceptable Evidence. In this stage, effective assessments for learning and of learning are created to match the expectations of the learning goals from stage 1. The third and final stage is Planning the Learning Experiences. In this stage, engaging and meaningful activities and experiences are developed to give students opportunities to experience learning in different formats and environments.
UBD YouTube Resource Videos
This resource video gives a brief overview of UbD from the perspective of co-author Grant Wiggins.
This is a second video that further explains the UbD and provides advice to educators just learning about UbD, however this video is from co-author Jay McTighe.
